How to update your card on file

Walkthrough for changing the card Stripe charges each month — portal URL, step-by-step, plus troubleshooting if the new card is rejected.

Last updated 3 June 2026

Cards expire. Banks reissue. The monthly £45 (or £195 on Growth Engine) can’t go through if Stripe doesn’t have a current card. Here’s how to swap it in under two minutes.

Step by step

  1. Open the client portal at ukwebmarketing.com/portal.
  2. Enter the email you used at signup. Stripe emails a one-time login link (no password to remember).
  3. Click the link in the email — it opens the Stripe-hosted portal directly. The URL starts with billing.stripe.com.
  4. In the portal, find the Payment methods section.
  5. Click Add payment method, enter the new card details, then click Save.
  6. Click the three-dot menu next to the new card and choose Make default.
  7. Optionally, remove the old card with the same menu.

That’s it. Stripe will charge the new card on the next billing date.

Troubleshooting

“The login link didn’t arrive” — check spam. The email comes from stripe@billing.stripe.com. If still nothing after 5 minutes, WhatsApp me and I’ll trigger a manual reset.

“The new card was declined” — three common causes: (1) the card is registered to a different billing address than the one you entered; (2) your bank flagged the £45 monthly recurring as suspicious (call them, say “expecting a recurring payment from Stripe, please allow”); (3) the card has 3D Secure enabled and the verification SMS didn’t arrive.

“I want to pay by direct debit instead of card” — Stripe supports Bacs Direct Debit for UK customers. Reply to your last invoice email asking to switch and I’ll send a Bacs mandate link. Direct debit takes 3 working days to confirm; existing card stays as backup until then.

“I’d rather pay annually” — annual billing is available for £45/mo (saves nothing — UK Web Marketing doesn’t markup the recurring) or £195/mo (saves two months — pay 10 months upfront, get 12). WhatsApp me and I’ll generate an annual invoice.

What if the card fails on billing day?

Stripe retries automatically over 4 days. You get an email each retry. On day 5 without a working card, the site doesn’t come down — I’ll WhatsApp you first. The site only comes down if I can’t reach you and no payment lands within 14 days. That’s almost never the situation.
